Originally intended as a secluded family retreat for Dato’ Franky Chua, Mangala Resort and Spa today upholds the founding values of sustainable living and giving back to nature

Formerly a barren wasteland left abandoned after nearly 70 years of tin and sand mining activities, the grounds of Mangala Resort and Spa today tell a remarkable story of second chances and seeing value in the unwanted. It was Dato' Franky Chua who had the idea of turning this land in the secluded but beautiful town of Gambang in Pahang into a holiday retreat for his family.

It took 15 years to complete and when it was, its transformation into a green paradise had a tremendous uplifting effect on family members and friends. “It's a place where you can breathe deeply, pause and reflect on what is truly important to you,” says Chua, the low-profile founder and managing director of Franky Group. “So I slowly began to open up to the idea of setting up a nature resort.”

This eco-conscious five-star resort has garnered prestigious international acclaim including being the first Malaysian resort to be awarded the FIABCI World Prix D’Excellence Award 2018 in the Environmental category. It was also named the Luxury Villa Resort Continent Winner for Asia at the 2018 World Luxury Hotels Award, among others.

Uniquely bonded to the wellbeing of its surroundings, Mangala Resort’s greatest appeal is perhaps its ability to connect guests to the beauty of a land that was once neglected and uninhabitable.

Tatler hears from Chua on how the resort gives back to its natural environment and why the demand for sustainability driven resorts will only increase in time.

What first drew you to this site?

It used to be a barren land of abandoned sand and tin mines. I decided to turn it around and consulted friends and experts to improve the soil and rehabilitate the land. The process to transform the site into a lush, nature retreat started in 2001. Palm trees were introduced to kickstart the rehabilitation process. But it was a tedious endeavour with many challenges.

How does the resort give back to its natural environment?

Sustainable resorts like ours look at eco-friendly construction, energy saving practices and protecting the biodiversity. For example, our rich biodiversity attracts an abundance of rare migratory birds. Mangala Resort and Spa is now home to more than 100 species of birds, as audited by Taman Negara.

Why was it important to you that the resort incorporate eco-friendly practices?

I suppose it goes back to my childhood, seeing my parents working hard at the rubber estate. I believe in living a simple life, and I feel that it is my calling to give back to nature for what it has given to my family—the products that we can use, eat and enjoy every day.

Do you see a greater demand amongst travellers for green luxury resorts in Malaysia?

Absolutely! Society is becoming more environmentally conscious as it becomes clear that sustainability is important. We are proud of Mangala Resort and Spa and the globally-recognised accolades that we have won over the years are testament of its potential for eco-conscious travellers. The relaxing sound of birds chirping and the excitement of sighting an exotic bird outside one's villa gives guests a unique experience. We believe that unique experiences like these are what travellers are looking for.

What do you think sets Gambang apart as a destination?

Gambang is wonderfully remote and peaceful, being located in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas in Malaysia. Yet it is highly accessible from Kuala Lumpur with slightly over two hours’ drive. The highways leading to Gambang is scenic, with spectacular views of nature and rivers. Its vast expanse of palm trees and lakes contrast with the dense tropical rainforest that surrounds it.
