Founder of luxury lifestyle café Cha Bei and assistant vice president of Lifestyle Curation at Galaxy Entertainment Group, Joanna Lui shares her travel tips and tricks

Last trip?

We were just in Beijing to see the second part of a reciprocal exhibition sponsored by Galaxy, between the Grimadi Forum in Monaco and the Forbidden City in Beijing. This one was entitled  ‘Princes and Princesses of Monaco, a European dynasty’. It was a showcase of rare pieces from Monaco’s Royal Court, including the Sovereign’s Throne. In the first part, we saw pieces from Chinese Imperial Court life on display in Monaco.

Next trip?

Unless business takes me elsewhere first, hopefully a late summer escape back to the Mediterranean, but there is an excursion to Bhutan we’re also dreaming of.

What do you love the most about travelling?

Discovery—I have a need to see something I haven’t before. I love tasting another culture through its food, and I love some alone time just casually exploring places with my husband, usually on foot. Otherwise, I’m always on the look out for ideas, innovations and inspirations for new creative projects.

Most memorable travel experience?

It would really be difficult to choose one, especially in our line of work which affords us so much travel. Usually, once a year (I’m not sure if this will change now that we have a baby at home), my husband finds a unique but beautiful place—somewhere a little off the usual mass travel map, for us to hide out. We spend a week to disconnect from work (as much as possible) and focus on reconnecting with ourselves. Those probably stand out.

And the worst?

These days, it would have to be any time our daughter Ella is grumpy while we are on the road, as I’m sure any mother could relate to.

Three things you always travel with?

Unfortunately, the phone—not just to stay connected, but because it carrries music for Ella, and realistically it is where all our photos and memories are collected and stored. There is always a snack in the bag—as much for the family as they are for myself—and minty eye drops, to help keep them moist.

What do you normally read on the plane?

Sadly, email. Otherwise, I always reach for Wallpaper or Monocle, and whatever fashion and travel magazines are on the rack. I also usually carry some sort of fiction with me for when I’m ready for more of an escape.

Favourite travel companion?

My husband. We met, fell in love, were engaged and got married—all on our travels.

Aisle or window seat?

Window—not just for somewhere to lean, but I always appreciate a view. I love to catch a sunrise or sunset no matter where I am, even at 30,000 feet.

Favourite travel app?

We use a combination of many. It’s probably a toss up between Luxe, Wallpaper and Louis Vuitton’s City Guides—all three are handy.

Your best travel tip?

As much as my work takes me to great places for dining and sleeping, I love having direct local insight on places to go and stay; to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of the place as if you belong.

Any tips on overcoming jet lag?

Adjust as quickly as possible to the local time zone, whether that requires getting yourself to stay awake longer or sleep earlier. It makes it that much harder once you mess up that first day.

What are the latest travel trends?

I’m not a fan of the tech trends that are for an imagined audience behaviour; more technology just for the sake of it is actually quite annoying. I do like that we are realising generally however, that luxury is not exclusively a marble palace anymore, and that true luxury can take many various forms and be different for each individual.
