The Kisawa Sanctuary offers a more sustainable avenue for resort travel.

Pairing both technological innovation and tradition, the Kisawa Sanctuary on Benguerra Island, Mozambique is giving travelers a new and luxurious way to offset their carbon footprint while vacationing abroad.

The inclusive design comes in the form of a collaboration between skilled artisans from Benguerra Island and a patented 3D printing technology that both protects the environment and leaves a light footprint on the natural landscape—the idea being a blend of modern and nature rather than an interruption.

The luxury retreat boasts a total of twelve bungalows set across 300-hectares of private sanctuary beach, forest and sand dunes overlooking the Indian Ocean and includes modern interior design reinvented by use of the 3D printer, which accounts for the property’s flooring, tiling, masonry and other cosmetic design elements.

Situated on part of the Bazaruto Archipelago, the WWF National Marine Park is also home to a variety of local animals including endangered sea turtles, dugongs, and over 145 species of birds, antelope, butterflies, and crocodiles.

The brainchild of Nina Flohr, Kisawa Sanctuary is decidedly a conservation sanctuary first, luxury retreat second. “My mission for Kisawa is to create a level of hospitality and design that, to my knowledge, does not exist today, a place that inspires feelings of freedom and luxury born from nature, space and true privacy,” she said in a statement. “We have used design as a tool, not as a style, to ensure Kisawa is integrated, both culturally and environmentally into Mozambique.”

Despite its efforts to blend luxury and nature, the resort will also include a world-class spa which will specialize in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic offerings, as well as a gym, a tennis court, watersports facilities and four restaurants.

Kisawa Resort will begin welcoming guests as soon as summer 2020. Rates start at US$5,714 per night for one bedroom accomodations and will include a 24/7 personal service team, chefs, e-bikes, and mini mokes for navigating the resort.
