With a hospitality career spanning 18 years, Jamie Mead’s work has taken him to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the South Pacific and now Malaysia. The Hilton's newly appointed regional general manager for Malaysia and the current GM for Hilton Kuala Lumpur has been living on our soil for almost three years now.

He is thoroughly enjoying his stint here and has travelled a fair bit around the country to explore its sights and wonders. Here we ask the adventure junkie to name his five favourite vacation spots in Malaysia.

Langkawi

I have been to Langkawi many times because I really like it there. The flight takes only 45 minutes, the airport transfer to the hotel is quick and the hotels are good. It is a very nice, relaxed place to spend the weekend in the sun and eating good food. It’s a popular place among my family and friends; and they are always more than happy to visit the island!

Terengganu

I really enjoyed my stay at Terrapuri Heritage Village. It is one of my highlights of Malaysia, soaking in the beauty of classic Malay houses restored to its former glory. I remember arriving at the hotel at night and couldn’t see a thing. However in the morning, we were suitably impressed with the architecture and surroundings. The people in the village who looked after the hotel cooked us a delicious local breakfast spread. It was a unique experience in a serene surrounding.

Redang Island

I did plenty of snorkeling and diving during my trip to Redang. It was a great experience, with beautiful clear waters and the wonderful ecosystem to explore under the sea. Beautiful sandy beaches aside, Redang has the best waters in the country because it’s less crowded unlike Thailand.

Penang

The Georgetown area is full of heritage and interesting sights, and you can wander around on your bicycle and make stops along the way to eat. It was the best way to explore the city and is definitely a highlight of my time in Malaysia. I loved the small boutique hotels and street arts around the city, and of course Batu Feringghi.

Kota Kinabalu

I have been on two holidays to Kota Kinabalu, mostly to partake in the fun of whitewater rafting. As soon as you get to Sabah, you will discover a whole different culture and really good food. The orangutan reserve was very educational and fun, making it a popular destination with foreigners. What makes Kota Kinabalu so unique is the tropical feel in a small sea city. In my opinion, what made the experience memorable were the friendly people of Sabah. I have yet to go to Sandakan, it’s definitely on my bucket list.
