Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the nation's transition to the endemic phase of the Covid-19 pandemic from April 1 onwards, which will include the opening of the nation's borders for international travel

In a press conference on March 8, prime minister Dato' Ismail Sabri Yaakob revealed that Malaysia would enter the endemic phase of the Covid-19 pandemic on April 1, which will see the removal of several restrictions including limited operating hours for businesses and workplace capacity limits.

From April 1, interstate travel will also be allowed for all individuals regardless of their vaccination status.

Malaysians are still required to wear a face mask in public and check-in to public locations using their MySejahtera app. Religious gatherings in mosques and other places of worship may also be performed without social distancing from April onwards.

International travel

In his speech, the prime minister also announced that the country's international borders would reopen on April 1, allowing Malaysians and non-Malaysians with valid travel documents to leave and enter the country without having to apply for the MYTravelPass.

Travellers only need to complete and submit the pre-departure form under the 'Traveller' section of the MySejahtera app.

Fully vaccinated travellers as well as children and teens aged 17 years and below (regardless of their vaccination status) are no longer required to undergo a quarantine period when returning to Malaysia. They only need to take a Covid-19 RT-PCR test two days before departure as well as an RTK-Ag test within 24 hours after arrival.

Ismail also encouraged travellers to take advantage of the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL), which has been in effect between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore since 2021.

Travel for unvaccinated individuals

According to a statement by Malaysian health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, individuals who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated are required to undergo quarantine for a period of five days upon returning to Malaysia from abroad.

Travellers who are exempt from receiving the Covid-19 vaccination due to health reasons are required to submit a letter of exemption or some other proof from a medical professional on the MySejahtera app.
