Last year I spent New Year’s Eve in Tulum and had a blast. I went to the party at Casa Jaguar and afterwards partied on the beach with lots of beautiful people from around the world.
I stayed in Tulum for five days in total and stayed at Azulik, an eco-friendly hotel with no electricity at all.
There’s no Wi-Fi or TV, so you are completely unplugged from the world. All the villas at Azulik are made from wood and face the beautiful Caribbean.
It’s also an adults-only resort, so you can enjoy the scenery without any distractions.
Outside the hotel, don’t miss snorkelling or scuba diving in the cenotes, which are ancient underwater cave systems.
And don’t leave Tulum without visiting the Mayan ruins, where you can learn so much about the region’s culture.
Getting there: I flew Cathay Pacific to San Francisco and then United Airlines to Cancun International Airport.
Days out of office: I spent three days in San Francisco and five days in Tulum.
Stop in San Francisco: If you’re breaking up the long journey from Hong Kong to Tulum by staying in San Francisco, try to make time to visit Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, which is one of my favourite hotels in the world.
In San Francisco, I stayed at the St Regis. There are so many good places to eat in the city, and there are lots of gluten-free and vegan options. My favourite restaurants there are Zuni Café, Anchor Oyster Bar and Saison.
