Hong Kong's own André Fu is the creative mind behind the interiors of the city’s newest luxury hotel, the St Regis Hong Kong

The St Regis Hong Kong, which opened last month on the Wan Chai harbourfront a stone’s throw from the Convention and Exhibition Centre, is a residentially inspired retreat described by André Fu, designer of its interiors, as a “curated mansion” intended to be a luxurious home away from home.

According to André, the essence of the St Regis Hong Kong reflects that of the original St Regis New York, but fitting into the lifestyle and context of the city. “The property was designed to be as iconic as the St Regis in New York, which was a fit for the Astor family back then, and that’s what made it memorable,” says André.

“It had the feeling of a private home and it’s where the society of New York gathered at the time. Here, we have made the St Regis contemporary and made it relevant. It’s a very elegant, timeless property with the integrity of a classic hotel but, given it has just over 140 rooms, it is very private and intimate.”

André’s design narrative for the interiors reflects his personal memories of Hong Kong. “It depicts the city through silhouettes from the past, touches from the old world,” he says. “There are subtle details throughout, some inspired by the street lamps of the city, others by architectural cornices or architraves that were in the city. It captures the feeling of the destination.”

André’s design also expresses his nostalgia for his hometown of the 1960s and ’70s, an era evoked in Wong Karwai’s In the Mood for Love, a romantic movie that André admires for its poignant qualities. The result is a brilliant combination of the past and present, a haven designed for entertaining, and a gathering place that’s stylish and yet feels like home.

The property has much to offer within its lavish interiors. The restaurant L’Envol, headed by Michelin-awarded chef Olivier Elzer, formerly of Pierre and L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, provides French fine dining. The Chinese restaurant Run, helmed by another Michelin-starred chef, Hung Chi-Kwong, serves elegant Cantonese cuisine.

The Drawing Room and The Terrace feature the St Regis Hong Kong Afternoon Tea, with guests selecting their savouries and sweets from a dimsum-inspired trolley.

In the lobby, a champagne sabrage ceremony—the traditional opening of champagne bottles with a sabre dating back to Napoleon—is held at 5.30pm every day to celebrate the transition from day to evening. Guests will also appreciate the in-room check-in and e-Butler services that come with all rooms and suites.
