Read all about the standout performances by Malaysian athletes at the 31st SEA Games

It has been an exciting two weeks as we watched Southeast Asian athletes compete in-person at SEA Games for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. On May 23, they bid 'tạm biệt' or goodbye to Hanoi at an extravagant closing ceremony before heading back home.

Despite finishing at sixth position, the lowest standing since the 1983 Games, Malaysian athletes still have much to celebrate as the contingent managed to win 39 gold medals, 45 silver medals and 90 bronze medals, surpassing its target for this year. They managed to defend their champion titles in diving, gymnastics and discus throw.

SEA Games newcomers also broke new ground and came out on top in golf, karate, snooker and more, bringing new hope for the contingent's potential in the next Games in Cambodia.

For the first time since the 1999 SEA Games in Brunei, Malaysia secured a gold in mixed doubles badminton. At the semi-finals, Chen Tang Jie and Peck Yen Wei came face-to-face with Indonesian pair, Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas, after defeating them at the 2018 Taiwan Open. They came out on top after an intense 63-minute match, propelling them into an exciting final match against compatriots, Hoo Pang Ron and Cheah Yee See, to cinch their victory.

Taekwondo

Twenty-two-year-old Mohd Syafiq Zuber beat out Vietnamese Minh Bao Kha Pham 15-7 in the finals of the men's below 80kg competition at the Hanoi SEA Games to deliver Malaysia's first gold medal in the sport since 2017. He attributes his victory to advice from his coach, Rusfredy Tokan Petrus, encouraging him to switch to a heavier division after competing in the lightweight category for the last few years. He also thanked former national coach Yu Myung-won, who trained him during a three-week stint at Chungnam Physical Education High School in Korea before the SEA Games.

Another young athlete living up to his potential is Ervin Chang, 23. He is the first Malaysian to win an individual gold medal in golf at the SEA Games, ending a 21-year wait. Chang was also part of the winning team, alongside Marcus Lim Pang Chuen, K Rhaasrikanesh and A Nateeshva, for the men’s golf team event this year.

After narrowly missing out a spot on the podium at the last Games, Chang has expressed his desire to obtain a medal from the regional competition before putting his plan to leave the amateur world for greener pastures in professional golf into action.

Gymnastics

National gymnast Rachel Yeoh Li Wen beat out her regional peers and became the champion of the uneven bars and balance beams. She also placed third in the all-around event behind Indonesia's Rifda Irfanaluthfi and the Philippines' Aleah Finnegan. This was her second time at the SEA Games and we predict that Malaysians will be seeing much more of Yeoh as she continues to hone her craft.

The Malaysian contingent won its first gold in the pole vault event after a long 11-year wait, thanks to Nor Sarah Adi. This win contributed to its five-gold target in track and field, which was eventually met when discus thrower Irfan Shamsuddin defended his gold for the fifth time at the Games. Despite disappointment in sprinting and relay races, in which Malaysia mostly placed second and third, there is much optimism for the future of track and field as athletes showed their power and potential in Hanoi.

Air Pistol

National shooter Nurul Syasya Nadiah Mohd Arifin delivered a surprise gold at the women's 10m air pistol. It was the 20-year-old shooter's debut appearance at the SEA Games and she collected an impressive 239.3 points, beating out Thai and Vietnamese shooters, Tanyaporn Prucksakorn and Thu Vinh Trinh.

Johnathan Wong acquired a matching gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol match, recapturing his position on top after firing a blank and finishing fourth three years ago at the 2017 SEA Games.

Following Malaysia's success in taekwondo, 23-year-old Shahmalarani Chandran secured a gold medal at the female kumite 50kg karate event. An impressive feat, this was Chandran's first time at the regional Games.

Snooker

Lim Kok Leong celebrated his 27th birthday in style by bringing home a gold in the men's snooker 6-red singles event. This was followed by a silver in the snooker singles after an intense match against Thai snooker legend, Passakorn Suwanawat. His SEA Games celebrations will be cut short by his upcoming enrolment at the inaugural Asia & Oceania Qualifying School (Q School), through which he hopes to qualify for the World Snooker Tour (WST) and make his dream of going pro a reality.
