Hong Kong athlete, Daniel Chan Ho-Yuen wins a bronze medal in badminton men's single at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, adding more to Hong Kong’s medal haul

Daniel Chan Ho-yuen wins another medal for Hong Kong at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, clinching a bronze in badminton men’s single. The win adds on to Wong Ting-ting's bronze medal in table tennis, Leung Yuk-wing's bronze medal in boccia, Chu Man-kai's silver win in badminton and the mixed Boccia team’s silver medal—bringing the city’s total medal haul to five.

Chan triumphed over South Korea’s Kim Kyung-hoon in a tense match that ended in 2-0 (24-22, 21-10). The para-badminton star has been representing Hong Kong in international competitions since 2010 and won a silver medal in the WH2 class at the 2018 Asian Para Games. He also won bronze medals in the men's doubles World Championships in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

After his win, Chan said that he had to overcome his nerves in the opening game. “I was so stressed and the beginning wasn’t good. Kim Kyung Hoon played so well in the beginning but in the middle I told myself to believe in myself, my name is Chan Ho Yuen, I need to believe in myself,” he said.

Upon his win, Hong Kong Baptist University, where Chan studies as a physical education and recreation management student, said “He has overcome daunting physical limitations and hurdles with an unyielding fighting spirit and extraordinary resilience, and established himself as a top para-badminton player not just in Hong Kong but in the world.”

Chan exploded in the badminton scene when he delivered the upset of the year, after defeating world number one, South Korea's Kim Jung-jun at the Australia International. Prior, Kim had won all his singles matches since debuting in 2012.
