After a decade, the Singapore Grand Prix still remains one of the most exciting events on the F1 calendar.

1. Bright Lights, Big City

Singapore made it into the Formula One hall of fame in 2008 for hosting the world’s first night race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Still the only night street race on the F1 calendar today, the Singapore Grand Prix sees top drivers race under lights—which requires 3.2MW of power!—at speeds of up to 320km/h.

2. Rookie Road

F1 world champions Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg may have bowed out from this year’s tournament, but look forward to three rookies on the grid (pictured from left): Canada’s Lance Stroll with Williams Martini Racing, Belgium’s Stoffel Vandoorne with McLaren-Honda and France’s Esteban Ocon with Sahara Force India.

Off the track, Singapore’s largest entertainment stage at the Padang will see international headliners such as Ariana Grande, The Chainsmokers and Calvin Harris (pictured), all of whom will be performing in Singapore for the first time, alongside George The Poet, Lianne La Havas and Seal. This year will also see a record number of homegrown musicians making their Marina Bay Street Circuit debuts, including rappers The Lion City Boy and Shigga Shay, as well as R&B divas Vandetta and Tabitha Nauser.

8. Local Pride

There has never been a Singaporean driver in F1 (yet), but rest assured that a local racer has navigated the treacherous turns of the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Well, at least these four: Gregory Teo, Yuey Tan, Andrew Tang (pictured)  and Ringo Chong, who have competed in two separate one-make series. While Teo will not be participating in the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific this year, Chong, Tan and Tang will be racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

9. From Pole To Podium

Will Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel (pictured, after his win at the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix) claim his fifth victory in Singapore? The odds seemed to be in his favour until arch-rival  Lewis Hamilton took the drivers’ championship lead for the first time this season, after winning the Italian Grand Prix last Sunday. Besides Vettel, only three other F1 drivers have won on the Marina Bay Street Circuit: Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso (twice) and Hamilton (twice).

 10. See You Next Year?

Well, maybe… This is the final year of Singapore’s current five-year deal with F1. While no decision has been made yet, a Singapore date is included on the 21-race 2018 F1 calendar, which sees the return of France and Germany to the race, and Malaysia dropping off. So until then... enjoy the party this year!
