Here’s all you need to know about the opening hours of Hong Kong stores during the most important Chinese holiday

Chinese New Year is the biggest festival on the traditional Chinese calendar, and is often regarded as an occasion for family reunions. Most importantly, the first day of Chinese New Year (falling on January 25 this year) is a time for family visits, when younger members of the family receive red packets from married couples and the elders as a form of blessings. On this day, most stores in Hong Kong—even the ones that are open on other public holidays—are closed or open with modified hours.

Whether you find yourself running low on festive treats when your friends and relatives pay a visit, or needing to escape from the family for a while with a cup of coffee, we’ve done the legwork to help you find out which stores are open and closed over Chinese New Year 2020.

While you’re at it, check out these Chinese New Year menus offered at our favourite Chinese restaurants that are certainly open during the holiday.
