Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey—the interview of the year—aired on Monday, March 8 (SGT), here's what we learnt so far
Ever since the couples first public appearance in 2017, all eyes have been on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. From their shock romance, subsequent wedding and the birth of their son Archie––not to mention the bombshell announcement of the couple stepping back from the Royal Family––news on the pair has been almost endless, with the world eager to know every detail.
Now, for the first time, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have opened up like never before. In their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey the pair chatted everything from the sex of their new baby to secrets about their 2018 nuptials. Whether you caught every last juicy minute of the interview, or are yet to catch up, we're letting you know all the details that were revealed:
The baby's gender will be revealed in the interview
The ultimate gender reveal. Just minutes into the interview with Oprah, Meghan confirms that they will confirm whether they are having a boy or girl once Harry joins later.
Meghan and Harry are not being paid for the interview
Meghan was "naive" about what it meant to become a Royal
Stating that the couple knew it "wasn’t our day" when referring to their 2018 wedding, Meghan also stated that she went into the marriage naively, not fully understanding what being a Princess would entail.
“There was no way to understand what the day to day was going to be like,” she says. “What does it mean to be a royal? What do you do?”.
Meghan practiced her courtseys ahead of meeting the Queen
Meghan reminisces that the first time she met the Queen was shortly after a church service, with Harry letting her know that she would be meeting his grandmother.
Meghan explains that she was excited, but surprised when Harry asked if she knew how to curtsey.
She states that she practiced very quickly, did “a very deep curtsey” and then “we just sat there and we chatted, and it was lovely and easy.”
Meghan also revealed that she hadn't Googled the royals prior to her relationship with Harry and her subsequent meeting of the family, saying “Thank God I didn’t know a lot about the family. Thank God I hadn’t researched, because I would have been so in my head about it.”
The pair actually married three days before the televised church service
The world was watching on May 19, 2018 when Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle––however, Meghan has revealed that they actually married three days before the royal wedding, just them and the priest. With Meghan adding: “Nobody knows this”.
Kate Middleton made Meghan cry ahead of the wedding
After the wedding, a story emerged in the British tabloids that Meghan had made Kate cry, however, Meghan sets the record straight, claiming that it in fact was the other way around.
The story was that Meghan had made Kate Middleton cry over Meghan’s strict flower girl demands.
“The reverse happened,” she states, with Oprah quickly probing––“When you say the reverse happened,” what actually happened, Oprah asks.
A few days before the wedding Kate was upset about flower girl dresses and “it made me cry. And it really hurt my feelings,” says Meghan.
“It just did not make sense with everything going on with the wedding to not be supportive,” says Meghan. Meghan states she stopped this story from getting out at the time, but the press later picked up on it.
She adds that she doesn’t tell that story “to be disparaging of Kate”.
The Queen gifted Meghan pearls
Shortly after claiming that she was "silenced" by the Royals, Meghan states that the Queen has always been wonderful to her, even gifting her with pearl earrings.
Oprah then asks whether Kate was supportive. “I think everyone welcomed me,” states Meghan.
Meghan has referred to her time as a royal as “almost unsurvivable.”
Meghan has called her time as a royal “almost unsurvivable,” going on to say that there was a time when she “just didn’t see a solution.”
She stated “I just didn’t want to be alive any more. And that was a very real and clear and frightening and constant thought.”
Meghan also explained that she went to a senior person in "the firm" and said she needed help, but was told that she could not get that help.
She then she went to human resources and asked for help, but was told “My heart goes out to you because we see how bad it is. But we can’t help you because you’re not a paid employee of the institution.”
The couple first proposed moving to a Commonwealth country, rather than LA
When talking of the couple's decision to take a step back from Royal life, Harry explained that when asking his family they said "We can do it in a Commonwealth country, we had suggested New Zealand, South Africa, Canada." but the family wasn't open to the decision.
Prince Charles has stopped taking Harry's calls
When probed by Oprah if the couple "blindsided" the Queen with their decision, Harry stated simply "No, I have too much respect for her.”
Continuing, he said that when they first made the move to Canada he had conversations with the Queen and with his father, Prince Charles, “before he stopped taking my calls.”
Harry states that he was "trapped"
Oprah probes Harry whether he would have stepped back from Royal life if it were not for Meghan, with his reply: “No, I was trapped but I didn’t know I was trapped.”
When asked by Oprah to explain further, Harry continued, “Trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are. My father, my brother they are trapped.”
Harry was cut off financially from the Royals
The recent Netflix and Spotify deals now make more sense, as Harry explained that in early 2020 he was cut off financially from the Royal family.
He stated that the recent deals were not part of the couple's original plan, but after being made financially independent, he had to find a way to afford security. Adding that he only has what his mother, Princess Diana, left him.
The couple still have Zoom calls with the Queen
Although Harry revealed that he felt “really let down” by Prince Charles, he has confirmed that his father is taking his calls again.
The couple do, however, regularly enjoy Zoom calls with Harry's grandmother, the Queen. Harry also added that he is “on different paths” to his brother, Prince William, but that he loves him "to bits."
Harry respects the Queen's decision
With the couple's exit agreement coming up at the end of March, Oprah asked if Harry was hurt by the Queen's decision to not have the couple return as working members of the royal family.
Harry stated that he “absolutely respects” the Queen’s decision. The warmth and respect Harry clearly has for his grandmother was apparent throughout the interview.
Meghan's only regret:
Oprah asked the couple if they had any regrets––Harry answered no, but Meghan added she has one: believing the firm when they said they would protect her.
There may be more to come...
As the interview closed, Oprah thanked the couple for sharing their “love story,” and hinted that more details may still be to come tomorrow that couldn't be included in today's special.
Stay tuned for more details.
