An in-depth look at Rolex's time-honoured relationship with cinema

This year’s Academy Awards certainly gave us a lot to talk about. In addition to the entertainment buzz, however, there has also been plenty of news tying luxury brands to the silver screen, with Rolex prominently on our radar.

Since 2017, Rolex has been the exclusive watch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as the official sponsors of the Oscars. But the Swiss watchmaker’s relationship with cinema goes back longer than this. The brand’s timepieces have had their own cameos within notable movies, not to mention on the wrists of the industry’s movers and shakers themselves.

Such is the brand's dedication to supporting the cinema, that it has a special space in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, which opened to the public last September. On the third floor of the museum, visitors can explore the Rolex Gallery, which showcases the elements of moviemaking and takes viewers through the work by artists and technicians from ideation to final production, as well as the diverse talents behind the magic of the silver screen.

The brand’s influence on film history even extends to influencing filmmakers’ approach to their work. Take Titanic (1997) director James Cameron. Even before he became the brand ambassador, he had been wearing a Rolex Submariner for years, notably during his deep-diving expeditions to the Titanic wreckage.

An avid diver, Cameron says of the model, “Before I bought my Submariner, I knew it as the watch the dive community considered the best. When you had one, it signified that you’d arrived—that you were a diver to be reckoned with.” His beloved timepiece accompanied him into the Amazonian forests while he was filming Avatar (2009); he then gifted it to the chief of the Kayapo tribe as a token of gratitude for their hospitality.

Like Cameron, fellow cinematic luminary Martin Scorsese swears by his Rolex. The legendary director not only has an enviable collection himself, but he also mentors upcoming filmmakers under the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. Rolex’s close association with movies and moviemakers reflects the brand’s own pursuit of excellence—a pursuit that’s sure to continue reaping great results.
