Based on the 2000 book of the same name, the biographical crime film already has the fashion world holding its breath in anticipation

This is not a drill: Lady Gaga is returning to the big screen, and taking on one of the most legendary fashion families to boot. Following her award-winning turn in 2018’s A Star Is Born, in which she starred alongside Bradley Cooper, the talented artist will be playing the leading role of Patrizia Reggiani in the upcoming House of Gucci.

Directed by Ridley Scott, the biographical crime film traces the turbulent marriage and divorce of Patrizia and Maurizio Gucci, then the head honcho of the Gucci fashion house, and promises to reveal its true story and all the scandalous twists and turns. Here’s everything that we know so far about the upcoming film.

The official trailer has dropped and it is juicy

The first trailer has just been released and it is just as glitzy as you’d expect a film about one of fashion’s greatest families to be. Set in 1995, the film depicts the events leading up to Maurizio Gucci’s murder, and the shocking consequences that followed. Also on full display are Gaga and Driver’s Italian accents—trust us, you’ve got to hear it to believe it.

It has an all-star cast

Aside from Lady Gaga, the film also boasts an impressive cast, including Adam Driver, an unrecognisable Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, and Salma Hayek. The official posters have also dropped, showing the actors in character, and Gaga and Leto have also shared their posters on Instagram, along with the same caption: “Stasera” (or ‘tonight’ in Italian).

Based on Sara Gay Forden’s 2000 book, The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed, the movie details the marriage and life of Patrizia Reggiani, who married Gucci heir Maurizio Gucci in 1973. Their marriage ended in 1985 when Gucci left his wife and family for his younger lover. Subsequently, Gucci was fatally shot in 1995 by a hitman in Milan, and Reggiani was convicted of the crime, and received a 26-year sentence in court. After serving 18 years in prison, Reggiani was released in 2016 and continues to live in Milan, with support from Maurizio’s estate, British Vogue reports.

However, some of the real-life descendants of the Gucci family are not so happy with the portrayal, which they have deemed a horrific incursion of their family’s privacy. Patrizia Gucci, the great-granddaughter of Guccio Gucci, told the Associated Press in an interview: “They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system. Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything. But there is a borderline that cannot be crossed.”

It will probably win an Oscar just for its outfits

When Lady Gaga’s involved, you can bet the fashion is going to be nothing short of spectacular. But add that to a fashion biopic? The results are Oscar gold. To keep the looks as authentic as possible, the production team reached out to current Gucci CEO Marco Bizzari, who told WWD that the company gave the production “total creative freedom” and provided “access to the house’s historical archive for wardrobe and props.”
