1. Black Swan, 2010

Natalie Portman headlined Black Swan in 2010, perhaps one of the most famous psychological thrillers we know to this day. The movie centres around Portman's character, Nina, as she prepares for her biggest role as a ballerina: the Swan Queen. Throughout the film, it's established that Nina is an unreliable narrator. No one can say exactly which scenes truly happened, and which were mere hallucinations; though perhaps everyone can agree that Nina's suicide was a surprising plot twist—especially after audiences were left to believe that Nina had killed someone else.

2. Us, 2019

A chilling tale about doppelgängers, Us tells the story of a family haunted by their doubles. Throughout the film, audiences are given a glimpse into the traumatic past of the family's matriarch, Adelaide Wilson. As a child, Adelaide came face to face with her doppelgänger, Red, at a house of mirrors in a beachside fairground. Years later and now married with two kids, Adelaide and her family return to the very same spot and encounter their doppelgängers. The surprising twist? The Adelaide we know throughout the film is, in reality, Red. Red had stolen Adelaide's identity as a little girl and continued on with her life, until that summer.

3. Identity, 2003

A John Cusack movie from 2003, Identity narrates the chilling tale of a group of people, stranded at a motel during a storm. Gradually, each of these people become the victims of murder at the hand of an unknown serial killer. Sounds creepy? As it turns out, none of the events actually happened. The entire scenario is entirely made up in the mind of a real serial killer who also suffers from split personalities. The people dying in the film are actually his other personalities whom his psychiatrist is trying to help him "kill off".

4. Shutter Island, 2010

Martin Scorsese directs the film Shutter Island which finds Leonardo DiCaprio playing the role of Teddy Daniels. In the beginning, Teddy is portrayed as a US Marshal investigating a psychiatric facility on the movie's namesake island. Throughout his visions and delusions, the plot unravels and viewers soon discover that Teddy is merely a delusion. He's a character created in the mind of inmate Andrew Laeddis who's been committed to Shutter Island after murdering his wife.

5. Planet of the Apes, 1968

Planet of the Apes is a cult classic. Since its first release in 1968, the movie has been continuously watched and rewatched, beloved by generations. In the film, a group of astronauts land on a strange planet ruled over by apes. Here, humans are caged or rounded up in pens, while their ape overlords control just about everything—from the government to religion. The surprise twist? In the end, George Taylor (the movie's protagonist) discovers that this strange planet is in fact, Earth.
