The Duchess of Sussex's first book, "The Bench", will explore the bond between father and son through a mother's eyes

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle is publishing a children's book on June 8 which explores the special bond between father and son, seen through a mother's eyes. Markle draws inspiration from her life with Prince Harry and son, Archie.

Announcing the news on Instagram, Markle said The Bench started as a poem that she wrote for Prince Harry on Father's day, the month after Archie was born and added, "that poem became this story".

The book will be illustrated by award-winning illustrator Christian Robinson. "Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolour illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens," Markle says.

In publishing the book, Markle hopes that it "resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with [hers]". The upcoming book is not the Duchess' first experience with writing as she previously wrote for a lifestyle blog called The Tig. It was shut down when she began dating Prince Harry.

Publishers, Penguin Random House said that the book aims to evoke "a deep sense of warmth, connection, and compassion". "It gives readers a window into shared and enduring moments between a diverse group of fathers and sons—moments of peace and reflection, trust and belief, discovery and learning, and lasting comfort," they added.

This children's book is just one of the new ventures that Markle and Harry have taken up after stepping away as senior members of the royal family in 2020. They launched their own charitable foundation, Archewell with Prince Harry joining mental health firm, BetterUp Inc., signing a deal with Spotify to create podcasts and producing the upcoming Netflix series about the Invictus Games.
