'May It Please The Court' leads Jung Ryeo-won and Lee Kyu-hyung reveal anecdotes about working together on Disney+ Hotstar's latest legal K-drama

May It Please The Court is Disney+ Hotstar's latest legal K-drama starring Jung Ryeo-won (Witch At Court, Prosecutor Civil War), Lee Kyu-hyung (Prison Playbook, All of Us Are Dead, Seoul Vibe), Jung Jin-young (Love Rain), and Kim Hye-eun (Itaewon Class, Twenty-Five Twenty-One). Unlike the more lighthearted legal series like Extraordinary Attorney Woo, the 12-part K-drama takes on a darker turn as its characters deal with ambitions, politics, and a complex web of legal cases.

Jung Ryeo-won plays Noh Chak-hee, a feared and tenacious lawyer with the prestigious Jangsan Law Firm while Lee Kyu-hyung plays Jwa Si-baek, an unassuming but driven public defender in the state of Jeongsan.

Noh is set to receive a promotion to become a partner at the law firm but, after mishandling a case, she loses her opportunity and instead is sent to work with Si-baek at the public defender's office for a year before she can return to Jangsan. Despite having to learn to navigate their contradictory personalities, their partnership grows as they tackle difficult cases while unravelling a deadly mystery in the background that will implicate both of them.

Upon the release of the first episode on September 21, 2022, Tatler sat down with the two leads for a quick chat about May It Please The Court.

What did you love most about your roles?

Lee Kyu-hyung (LKH): First, I found the script very engaging and solid. And unlike other legal dramas, the series of events is complicated because they intertwine and the characters are intertwined as well. Also, once I learned that I would be starring alongside Jung, I accepted the project in a heartbeat.

Jung Ryeo-won (JRW): For me, I liked my character's impeccable appearance; she dresses beautifully but on the inside, her mind is very raw and authentic. She’s also very straightforward so I like that contrast. That was why I was drawn to the script. When I knew that Lee was going to be working on this project, I wanted in as well.

How similar or different are you from your characters?

JRW: Lee said that he’s about 30 per cent like his character and it’s the same for me. We say this because the characters in the series went through a lot of dramatic events and our lives are pretty different from that. It’s not something we’ve experienced so we can only imagine what they went through.

Can you describe what it was like to be on set for the first time?

JRW: Before we started shooting, Lee would look really casual and chill, playing with his phone (laughs) as if he hadn't been preparing for the day’s shoot at all. But once the camera started rolling, he was really good; he was always this way. This made me want to focus even better and motivated me to be better.

Why do you think K-drama fans will love May It Please The Court

LKH: I think there’s a very fascinating element in the series that transcends borders and cultures.

JRW: In a typical K-drama, you can only follow the emotional arc of one character and the plot is obvious—the good people win and the bad people get their just desserts. in the case of May It Please The Court, if you miss out on one or two episodes, you'd lose track of the story. It's very unpredictable and fast-paced, and the suspicious person changes every time so you need to follow closely.

What are your messages to the fans?

JRW: We’re just grateful that so many of our fans are sending so much love for our series. We won't disappoint you. And we hope that May It Please The Court will be successful so that we can go to where you are to meet you!
