From Rangoli workshops to our annual light-up, here’s how you can celebrate the Festival of Lights in Singapore this year despite Covid-19

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is coming up soon on November 4 and it is a very special time for Hindus where they get to celebrate the victory of good over evil.

While we know you can’t wait to check out the light-ups and indulge in Indian snacks and Mithais, unfortunately, we do have to consider the increasing number of Covid-19 cases as well as the current restrictions which have forced us to scale back out events significantly.

That said, we don’t have to miss out on all the fun. From Indian restaurants that are delivering their Deepavali menus straight to your door to online traditional activities, here’s how you can celebrate the occasion in Singapore despite the ongoing pandemic.

Every year, Singapore’s Little India will light up with a gorgeous 1.5km street light up which will feature Gopuram as the main decorative piece to welcome the joyous celebration of lights. The stretch also features a host of other intricate artworks as well as stalls selling Indian snacks, decorations and more.

This year, our Deepavali celebrations have been stepped up a notch with an array of exclusive promotions and discounts all over Little India.

One of the highlights to look out for is the Briyani Fiesta which is a mega biriyani celebration that involves 30 restaurants in Little India. With this fiesta, enjoy a variety of signature biriyani at a promotional price every week by different restaurants such as Urban Roti, Al Abu, Aromas of India and more.

As a result of Covid-19, this year’s Deepavali celebrations will be mostly virtual.

Grab your family members and enjoy online activities such as food masterclasses and demonstrations, entertainment shows, Tiktok dance challenges and even a karaoke competition that will all be taking place online.

Some of these highlights include a literary musical drama where poems from ancient Tamil literature will be read as well as a Pattimandram where four Singaporean speakers and two overseas ones will battle it out in a debate forum.

This year, the Indian Heritage Centre has organised a series of activities just for you and your Tatlings.

Simply drop by with your kiddo and they will get to try their hands at making their own festive paper lamps all while learning about the festival and its historical roots.

If your kids are unable to walk the full stretch of the 1.5km Deepavali light-up along with Little India, you can also bring them here to see a miniature replica that is complete with this year’s decorated arch and peacock designs.

Recently, the Singapore Government announced that they would be extending the Stabilisation Phase and all current Covid-19 restrictions till November 21. This means that dining in will continue to be capped at two vaccinated people and that we will only be allowed to welcome two visitors in our homes at any one time.

Unfortunately, this also means that we will not be able to visit our families in large groups or dine out together in restaurants.

Thankfully, despite the situation, our local Indian restaurants are still celebrating the festival of lights.

In fact, many of our award-winning chefs and restaurants have come up with some pretty spectacular Deepavali menus this season for us to enjoy at home or in their restaurants in groups of two.

From restaurants such as Tiffin Room to Rang Mahal, you can be assured that you will get to make your Diwali celebrations special despite the pandemic.

5. Enjoy a Rangoli and Kolam Workshop

Every year, during Diwali, many Hindu families will create elaborate and colourful decorations at the entrances of their homes. This is called Rangoli or Kolam and is a traditional decoration that is typically made with ground rice powder or rice grains. These decorations are usually elaborate and feature geometrical patterns, different colours and sweeping patterns.

This is typically done to welcome the goddess of wealth and good luck, Lakshmi, into the home. As you can imagine, it also takes a lot of skill.

Thankfully, this year, the Malaysian Association in Singapore will be running a Rangoli workshop with creative artist and designer Sudharavi who is in the Singapore Book of Records for creating a Rangoli for Singapore’s 53rd National Day.

The event will be taking place over Zoom and tickets will entitle guests to a package that will include all the materials you will need including coloured powders, glitter and glue.
