From ballet dance performances to concerts and art exhibitions, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this festive season

As we move into the last month of 2020 (finally), we’re looking forward to the holidays and make the most of Christmas in Hong Kong. Though the festivities are going to look a little different this year, there are still some Christmas markets and events taking place around town you can enjoy with your loved ones.

From Hong Kong Ballet’s dazzling annual production of The Nutcracker, to music performances and art exhibitions, we’ve rounded up the best Hong Kong events for December 2020.

1. NextGenHK Art Exhibition

When: December 3-22

Where: Soho House Hong Kong’s House Studio

What: Some art galleries have been closed due to the pandemic, but you can still get your art fix with NextGenHK’s exhibition this December. Curated by award-winning illustrator Jonathan Jay Lee, the event is dedicated to exhibiting works emerging young artists and illustrators, which features over a hundred pieces of artworks for visitors to peruse. In addition to showcasing a collection of artwork inspired by themes such as the pandemic, sci-fi and horror, the exhibition will also feature unique artist-made products for sale.

2. Life Through a Lens by Derry Ainsworth

When: December 13-14 

Where: PMQ, Hong Kong

What: Leading Hong Kong-based British photographer Derry Ainsworth will be partnering with Apre Artnet to host an immersive photograph exhibition to impress art lovers this month. As well as showcasing Ainsworth’s breathtaking collections of aerial, street and travel photography, the exhibition will feature a 270-degree immersive drone video on screen, offering visitors a fresh perspective of the city that never sleeps. Limited edition photography prints are also available for sale at the exhibition and on Apre Artnet's website

3. Hong Kong Ballet: The Nutcracker

When: December 18-27

Where: Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre

What: Hong Kong Ballet continues a beloved holiday tradition with its ninth annual production of The Nutcracker. Guests can expect a beautiful dance spectacle accompanied by a captivating storyline, a modern ballet choreography by Australian choreographer Terence Kohler, live accompaniment by Hong Kong Sinfonietta, as well as stunning costumes and sets.

4. City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong: Magnificent Mozart

When: December 20

Where: Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium

What: This month, the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong will be delivering a music programme dedicated to the great composer Mozart. Featuring a visually-pleasing eighteenth-century style costume set, guests will enjoy Mozart’s first compositions, serenades for frivolous parties and even the spectacular Queen of the Night aria.
