From theatre performances to art festivals, our cultural spaces play host to an exciting line-up of events this month

As the city emerges out of tightened pandemic measures, take some time this month to revisit some of your favourite cultural spaces—many of which play host to a myriad of events to pique your fancy and keep you entertained.

Leading theatre company Wild Rice welcomes audiences with an invigorating restaging of their iconic cabaret, while the Asian Film Archives presents a screening of Iranian auteur Abbas Kiarostami's acclaimed films. Here at Tatler, we round up some of the best happenings around the city: 

1. Faghag

What Postponed due to the heightened pandemic measures last month, Wild Rice’s restaging of its critically acclaimed cabaret starring Pam Oei returns, as she recounts heart-warming tales of Singapore’s LGBTQ culture, including being an ally to repeal Section 377A of the Penal Code in 2007. The production is directed by Ivan Heng and Oei will be accompanied by Julian Wong on the piano, promising a fun night at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre restricted for audiences above 18.

What STPI—Creative Workshop & Gallery presents the works of seven acclaimed Indonesian artists, including the likes of Jumaldi Alfi and Eko Nugroho among others this month. Taking place both online and at the ArtSpace @ Helutrans, the exhibition is an ode to the vibrant and distinctive expressions from the archipelago and highlights a host of concerns from the personal to the political.

3. Common Interest

What As part of a four-part photography programme Common Interest, view 20 original photographs taken from the 1950s to 1980s that immortalise a love for humankind, by Cultural Medallion winner Yip Cheong Fun.

4. Retrospective: Abbas Kiarostami

What Catch a line-up of award-winning films by Iranian auteur, Abbas Kiarostami, screened almost entirely in new 2K and 4K restorations. Kiarostami's five-decade career has seen him produce powerful and imaginative films that invokes introspection and a thoughtful exploration of the boundary between fiction and reality. 

A total of 18 feature films, four short features and 12 short. films will be showcased at the Oldham Theatre over the next two months, including Close-up, arguably the most representative work of Kiarostami's oeuvre, and rarely-seen short films made during pre-revolution Iran.

5. Festival of Women: N.O.W. 2021

What Look forward to an array of livestream performances, online workshops, live chats and digital exhibition at the third and final edition of the festival that celebrates alliances and solidarity forged between women, helmed by artistic director Noorlinah Mohamed from independent theatre company, T:>Works. This year's edition brings together over 200 collaborators over various sectors in the arts and social scene, and discusses topics women face that are seen as taboo or not oft-seen and heard.

6. Exclusive Studio Conversatoins

What Originally slated in May, the Art Galleries Association Singapore presents a hybrid event for the public to engage in conversation with Singapore-based galleries on the ways to support artists and navigate the art business. Featuring a total of 17 artists and their representing galleries, 11 of whom are based in Singapore, dialogues will take place both virtually and physically at selected artist studios.
