In Charlie Kaufman's I'm Thinking of Ending Things, you'll watch Jake yearn for a past that cannot be undone nor relived. If you think that the title itself is gloomy, so is the movie's overall tone and cinematography. But despite this unwelcoming feeling, you'll want to know how it would be like to take the backseat of a car with Jake and his girlfriend of many names as they drive to his hometown to meet his parents, despite his girlfriend constantly thinking of breaking up with him.

The Irishman

Martin Scorsese's The Irishman might be a fictionalised crime film that centres on Frank Sheeran's past as a hitman and sheds light on Teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa's mysterious disappearance. But aside from this (and after you've finished the film), you'll begin to question Frank's moral dilemma about loyalty which we may all relate to at a certain level. Despite being presented as a gangster drama (which admittedly can often be sensationalized), the film portrays how glum a hitman's life can be.

Being John Malkovich

In Being John Malkovich, puppeteer and clerk Craig gets in someone's head, specifically the fictionalised version of actor John Malkovich. But while this satirical film directed by Spike Jonze has a fantastical premise, it also tackles a relationship issue that is more grounded in reality as it portrays a love triangle involving Craig, his wife Lotte and Maxine.

The Truman Show presents a world where reality TV is in fact about a person whose whole life is broadcasted on television. Although the film will make you look for cameras and question the reality you've known for years, the film communicates a different message. It's a journey that you and Truman Burbank must have the courage to traverse as you watch the movie.

V for Vendetta

V for Vendetta challenges how we differentiate justice from revenge. Directed by James McTeigue, the movie follows the story of V, a mysterious masked man, who opposes a tyrannical government. The dystopian film is still admired by many for its timeless dialogue, symbolism and plot regardless of the film being based on Alan Moore and David Lloyd's 1981 graphic novel.
