The featurette released at D23 Expo 2022 reveals an action-packed high school drama with a Chinese mythological twist

Based on the New York Times bestselling graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, American Born Chinese is essentially a high school tale about Jin Wang who finds himself the only American-born Chinese at his new school. The twist here is that it also weaves in a fantastical cast of characters that includes the Monkey King, Guanyin and other Chinese mythological figures.

In the live adaptation for Disney+, Tatler's Asia's Most Influential honouree Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh portrays Guanyin, Daniel Wu plays the Monkey King, while relatively unknown Ben Wang takes on the lead role of Jin Wang. Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as well as award-winning Malaysian actress and Asia's Most Influential 2021 honouree Yeo Yann Yann also star.
