This piece is the most expensive artwork sold at auction by the renowned Japanese artist
At an auction held by Sotheby's Hong Kong this past weekend, Knife Behind Back—which was painted in 2000 by renowned Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara—sold for a record-breaking HK$196 million. It was sold in less than 10 minutes at the auction, with a total of six buyers eyeing the piece.
This figure beats Nara's former record, when his piece Sleepless Night (Cat) was sold for a cool HK$35.2 million at Christie's Hong Kong in 2018.
Done in Nara's signature cartoon 'superflat' style, Knife Behind Back showcases an angry-eyed girl in a red dress. At seven by seven feet wide, it is the artist's largest painting ever sold at auction.
