For bibliophiles, books are always essential—here's where to get your literary fix from home

For many of us, the circuit breaker from April 7 till May 5 is an opportunity to appreciate the joys of slow livingpractising mindfulness, whipping up a healthy meal, and disconnecting to tuck into a good book that's been sitting on your shelf.

But if you have found yourself out of titles to indulge in week two of the circuit breaker, fret not. There are still plenty of local bookstores that are actively delivering books to your doorstep. Add your favourites to cart and you might just get them in time for World Book and Copyright Day on April 23.

Basheer Graphic Books

Design lovers are more than familiar with Basheer Graphic Books. Tucked away at Bras Basah Complex, the store is an enclave for art, fashion, architecture and design titles. With the store temporarily shuttered due to the circuit breaker, art and design enthusiasts can still get their fix of coffee table books and magazines like Cereal, Kinfolk, and Design Anthology through their online store.

Not all of their selections are listed in the e-store, however, so if you can’t find the title you’re looking for, simply drop them a direct message or an email.

BooksActually

Nothing beats shopping for books in the cosy ambience (and the company of resident cats Cake, Pico and Lemon) of BooksActually’s Tiong Bahru store, but we’ll just have to make do with online shopping for now. Specialising in fiction and literature, look out for their extensive selection of Singapore literature (SingLit) and rare out-of-print titles. The independent bookstore also stocks titles from history and sciences to music and film.

If you aren’t sure what you are looking for, order a Book Box and let them surprise you. Themes include Coffee/Tea, Travel, Singapore Literature, Polymath, and Cats of BooksActually—selected by the bookstore cats.

Closetful of Books

Typically found holding book fairs, author visits or literary festivities in our local schools, Closetful of Books also delivers its specially-curated selection of picture books, early readers, novels, non-fiction titles and graphic novels to your homes.

Incredibly passionate about nurturing literacy and the love for reading in children, the store’s founders, Denise Tan and Kelvin Ng, will be happy to share any recommendations based on age, interests and budget—simply drop them a direct message on social media. Otherwise, browse their virtual bookshelves and add your favourites to cart.

Littered with Books

A quaint two-storey shophouse by Duxton Road that is littered with books from fantasy and science fiction to crime, thrillers and non-fiction, this independent bookstore also offers a curated selection of SingLit and award-winning children’s books.

Book lovers can now get their literary fix by making their orders via email. The shop has been posting book recommendations via Facebook, but if there’s a title you’re looking for, drop them an email and they’ll get you sorted.

The Moon

The Moon is not just a bookstore—it is also a cafe and lifestyle space. But while we can’t dig into their delicious selection of vegan and gluten-free desserts or cosy up with a book in its reading space for now, we can still bury ourselves in their eclectic selection of titles, half of which are written by female authors as well as writers and artists of colour.

The collection includes poetry and literary classics, children’s books, art and design, politics, business, cookery and even witchcraft.

Woods in the Books

For the young and young at heart, independent book store Woods in the Books features a well-curated collection of fiction and non-fiction picture books, including SingLit. With the implementation of the circuit breaker, the book store has taken their store online, taking orders via phone, WhatsApp, email and its social media channels. Simply message them and let them know what you’re looking for.

And if you want to brighten someone’s day, Woods in the Books also offers specially curated Sunbeams Surprise packs—Breezy Day Pack, Cheery Day Pack and Sunny Day Pack—tailored to your loved ones.
