Lin Fengmian (1900-1991) Steel Foundry, Ink and colour on paper, Undated , M K Lau Collection

Having undergone a momentous change in the twentieth century, mainly in 1949, the new nation of the People’s Republic of China was established. The M K Lau Collection has for over thirty years assembled a stellar collection of ink paintings that serve as chronological checkpoints, charting important historical and political events that gripped the Mainland. Among the featured paintings are works by leading twentieth century artists including Lin Fengmian, Fu Baoshi, Li Keran, and Shi Lu.

The exhibit’s landscape paintings show industrial development and agricultural reform, and red landscapes illustrate the impact of ideology on art. Additional artworks include paintings of daily life in New China show communes and work brigades, with portraits depicting leaders such as Chairman Mao and a rare image of Lenin.
