The Invictus Games were founded by Prince Harry

For those who don't know, the Invictus Games were founded in 2014 by Prince Harry himself. It is an international sporting event that caters specifically to Servicemen and women who have been injured or have an illness. The word invictus itself means "unconquered" and its namesake event was brought about after the Duke of Sussex saw, firsthand, how sport can help those suffering from illness or injury.

The Invictus Games were inspired by an American sporting event

Though the Invictus Games Foundation is UK-based, the sporting event itself was first inspired by the American Warrior Games. In 2013, Prince Harry flew to Colorado to witness the Warrior Games and was inspired by its camaraderie and sportsmanship.

There are adaptive games

Adaptive sports follow the traditional rules of the game it mimics, however it is also modified in some way to make it inclusive for those who have disabilities. For example, the Invictus Games allows its players to participate in activities such as sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby.

According to the Invictus Games Foundation, new participating nations are selected according to certain criteria. They've also said that the current criteria are under review, which means more countries may be able to join soon!
