This retrospective will focus on the impact of his artistic acquaintances and his life's defining moments on his work.

Starting June 20, the Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny, Switzerland, will dedicate itself to the works of the great French painter Henri Matisse through an exhibit titled "Matisse en son temps" (Matisse in his time), running through November 22.

This retrospective will focus on the impact of his artistic acquaintances and his life's defining moments on his work.



'Pont Saint-Michel' by Henri Matisse

Split into ten parts, the exhibit begins with the painter’s beginnings in Gustave Moreau’s studio, while still a student at the École des Beaux-Arts. These paintings present recurring themes in his work at the time, like view of the outside or models in the studio for example.


'L'Algérienne' by Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse was very influenced by his various travels, especially his time spent in Nice, in the south of France, but also Morocco. Like Delacroix, he explored the exotic theme of the odalisque.


'L'atelier' by Pablo Picasso

A member of Fauvism and then Cubism, Henri Matisse was a core figure of the European art scene. Pablo Picasso was his great rival.


'Grand intérieur rouge' by Henri Matisse

Operated on in 1941, Henri Matisse was bedridden for a period. This situation did not hamper his work though. In fact, he worked with color even more, through paintings of his studio titled “Interiors”.


'Jazz' by Henri Matisse

In 1947, Matisse began trying out new creation processes. He begins to cut up colorful pieces made with gouache. Stencils also reappear often in his works.
