The Malaysian theatre veteran was 62

Hailed as one of Southeast Asia's finest playwrights, Jit Murad was best known for Gold Rain And Hailstones (1992), the first play he had ever written. It was successfully restaged most recently in 2019. He also wrote Spilt Gravy On Rice, which won best original script at the 1st Cameronian Arts Awards in 2002. Jit, who started his theatre career in the '80s, was one of the founders of Instant Cafe Theatre as well as Dramalab. He has also compiled his works into a book, Jit Murad Plays.

According to The Star, Jit's passing was confirmed by fellow arts practitioner Jo Kukathas. Tributes have been pouring in on social media.

Musician Pete Teo wrote on his Facebook: "Dear Jit, we never did get the chance to know each other real well, even if we were contained by a tiny scene and separated by merely a few square miles of a small city stretched over 2 decades. I wish it was otherwise. You were always the brightest star among us restless children."

Rest in peace, Jit.
