Brutalist architecture renders powerful and imposing structures—in the Philippines, one such example is the distinguished Philippine International Convention Centre, or PICC

The Philippine International Convention Centre (PICC) has remained to be a historic and architectural marvel since its inauguration on 5 September 1976. Designed by National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, the PICC showcases brutalist architecture through bare concrete, striking visuals, and distinctive lines. It is often also regarded as Locsin's magnum opus, and has been a haven for art enthusiasts and patrons since its inauguration.

Recently, the brutalist style had been brought back into the mainstream consciousness by Instagram account, Brutalist Pilipinas, headed by writer and creative director, Patrick Kasingsing.

Kasingsing, who recently visited the PICC, says, "It’s like finally beholding a work of art (as a big fan of architect Leandro Locsin) without the distraction of crowds; a chance to intimately get to know a structure in all its physical facets, and how the architect probably beheld the structure before it opened to the public. For the first time, the stage that held the show, is the show.” According to him, his favourite area to photograph is the upper bridgeway connecting the Delegation Building with the Plenary and Reception halls. "This is where one can fully appreciate the structural acrobatics Locsin was able to execute with the littlest of design gestures," he explains.

Kasingsing, who approaches his photography methodologically says, “Whenever I take pictures of architecture, I first walk around leisurely around my subject before I take photos of whatever catches my attention; it is imperative to get to know your architectural subject first: to formally assess its form and appreciate how it stands, how it works, how the spaces flow and connect, and how people interact with it”.

Despite the PICC's long lifetime, it remains to be a top consideration for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE). This is thanks to its continuous rehabilitation, and its timeless design. Not to mention its quick adaptive strategy to circumstances in the new normal. Upgrades to WiFi and technological capacities help to address the requirements of virtual or hybrid events. Safety protocol is also strictly implemented to help people feel safe.

PICC's General Manager and Board Director, Atty. Renato B. Padilla, says: “We are eager to welcome our clients back to PICC. The circumstances may be different, and adjustments had to be made, but we are more than ready to help our clients and the MICE industry recover."
