The Swiss architecture firm has been chosen to design the new museum for visual culture in West Kowloon

The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority has appointed Swiss architecture firm Herzog and de Meuron, the same team behind the iconic Tate Modern museum in London, to design a new building for M+. The new cultural district in Hong Kong is being planned by the London-based Foster and Partners, and will eventually include 17 cultural venues around the large waterfront park.

Having been selected by an international jury ahead of a shortlist of applicants including Shigeru Ban, SANAA, Toyo Ito, Snøhetta and Renzo Piano, Herzog and de Meuron will be working together with Hong Kong-based architect planners TFP Farrells.

The new museum for M+ will focus on visual culture in Hong Kong, specifically 20th and 21st century art, design, moving image and architecture. The structure will sit on the waterfront of West Kowloon at the edge of an urban-planned park. The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority hopes that the new building will become a key venue for the exchange of visual and performing arts in Asia.
