As lockdown restrictions ease, GSC and Aurum Theatre are preparing to #ReopenCinemas this Friday (March 5) following a surprise announcement on social media
While the MCO 2.0 forced cinemas to close their doors to guests temporarily, leading cinema chain Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) generated excitement among fans with a Facebook post on March 2, revealing news about GSC's and Aurum Theatre's long-awaited reopening on March 5. The Facebook post by GSC garnered over 18,000 likes and 7,800 shares overnight.
Despite reopening in July 2020 after Malaysia's first movement control order, GSC's branches and its premium counterpart Aurum Theatre once again had to close in October due to the rise in Covid-19 cases in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and other states. Still closed in February 2021 due to MCO 2.0, GSC posted the #ReopenCinemas hashtag on its social media channels last month, tagging the Ministry of Health and the National Security Council in an appeal to reopen as other non-essential business sectors gradually began resuming operations.
