A series of workshops and photo exhibition founded by Steven Lee and Gen.T Malaysia 2020 honouree Nadirah Zakariya, EXPOSURE+ Photo posted an open call for Malaysia-based photographers to submit project proposals for an exhibition slated for September 2021

Supported by Canon Malaysia, EXPOSURE+ Photo will feature the works of several Malaysia-based photographers in various locations within Kuala Lumpur for three weeks this September, along with a slew of talks, workshops and panel discussions too. In spite of uncertainty, this photography festival forges on, unfazed in its mission to strengthen the local community of photographers, visual artists and anyone with an interest in photography.

Organised by the same team behind the KL20X20 photography exhibition, EXPOSURE+  Photo is spearheaded by photography buffs Steven Lee and Nadirah Zakariya.

"We understand that there are limitations in movement right now, but we do believe that strong stories are everywhere, including in our homes or places close to us," says Zakariya, one of the Malaysian honourees featured in Gen.T Asia's 2020 list of young leaders and disruptors from across the region.

"This Open Call is to anyone who is willing to explore storytelling through photography, not just professional photographers," she adds. "We are looking for projects with deeper meanings, and how the artists interpret the 'Belong in their own ways."

Upon being selected in March 2021, photographers will receive guidance from both Lee and Zakariya in executing, editing and developing their proposed projects in a five-month period of preparation for the September exhibition, which will also be displayed digitally for all to see.

Other faces to know behind the EXPOSURE+ Photo festival is self-taught Malaysian photographer and Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards project manager Munirah Rohaizan, and photographer Stacy Liu.

"We hope to see new works emerging even through these uncertain times," says Zakariya. "The beauty of photography is that it can be enjoyed even in solitude, without a large crowd. EXPOSURE+ Photo is also offering related workshops for anyone who is interested and who needs that extra push to create."
