Silverlens is pleased to announce one of two first solo exhibitions in its new gallery space by Manila-based artist Ryan Villamael.

This is Villamael’s sixth one-person exhibition since he joined the gallery roster in 2011, a year after he graduated from the University of the Philippines Fine Arts program. His last exhibition in 2015, Isles, won him the Ateneo Art Awards and a yearlong series of residencies which he undertook in 2016. He is one of the five Philippine artists in the current Singapore Biennale, with a prominent installation at the Singapore Art Museum.

"Comprised of several paper structures growing and spilling out of old books and informed by the rapidly shifting political climate over the years, Epilogue is an invitation to look closer, pay attention, and discover narratives, which happen to be more of open-ended stories than overt commentary, lurking in the intricacies of what seem to be blooming bouquets and otherworldly machinery. Villamael's attempt at telling stories—in the absence of perceived histories, propaganda, and personal feelings and biases—involves the act of opening books. And in place of words, there is a collection of images, amalgams of “triumphs and decay,” the resulting stories framed by whoever is reading the images and making the connections, and so, different with each gaze. The woven narratives from these books are as precarious in their “trueness” as Villamael’s structures look" (Carina Santos).

Epilogue will be on view from 14 February to 22 March 2017 at Silverlens, Lapanday Center, 2263 Don Chino Roces Avenue Extension, Makati City. For inquiries, contact or (02) 816 0044.
