Entitled Brilliant Legacy, Singapore artist Jays Phua celebrates the beauty of diamonds through his solo exhibition at Gallery 1819

Diamonds are formed under pressure; these carbon atoms bond together through intense conditions beneath the Earth's surface to become beautiful gems that are both highly desirable and durable.

Singapore artist Jays Phua found an unusual affinity with the precious stone. Much like a diamond in the rough, his childhood years were affected by his severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. Upon entering the workforce, Phua found early success in property investments, but his professional achievements had an impact on his lifestyle, which led to his mental and emotional health spiralling out of control.

After an extensive process of soul-searching, the self-taught local artist found a new sense of purpose in art at the age of 38. His creative pursuits became a means of expressing his emotions and served as a healing and calming medium where he could discover his true calling for art; Phua eventually left his successful career in real estate to pursue his passion for painting. “Art gave me healing, unbridled joy, and a sense of awakening,” he says.

Working almost exclusively in acrylic, Phua's paintings are currently being proudly displayed in the homes of art aficionados locally and abroad; these include collectors from Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Germany, and the US.

The Singaporean artist will soon debut a new series that ponders upon the beauty and value of diamonds in his new solo exhibition, Brilliant Legacy. Held at Gallery 1819, the solo exhibition will run from 6 to 30 November. Each artwork draws parallels to the beautiful facets of the precious stone, with linear forms and black-and-white colour contrasts that bring to mind the eye-catching crystalline structures.

Of the varying artworks that will be on exhibition, Solitaire is perhaps the best representation of Phua’s Brilliant Legacy series. The dazzling piece features expressive brush strokes in monochromatic tones with a touch of gold, arranged in compositions that recall the irresistible sparkle and light-catching quality of diamonds.

Brilliant Legacy is a series of abstract paintings that explore the idea of art as if it were the gem itself,” says Phua. “Is a work of art like a diamond? When you apply more focus and creative intensity, does it make the artwork shine brighter? Does the pressure to create perfect art create more unique and precious works of art?”

He adds: “Energetic lines push inwards, toward the centre of each piece. The movements of the brushstrokes symbolise the pressure that created the painting, as well as (represent) the prismatic structure of the gem itself. The high contrast of black-and-white (hues) emulates the crystalline structure of each piece while illuminating the pressure it took to create each unique piece.”

The 42 year-old artist's exhibition at Gallery 1819 also represents the gallery’s owner and principal art consultant Zak Lo’s commitment to championing the work of a diverse array of local artists.

“We have big walls to fill, and I want customers to come in and have a wide variety of art to choose from,” shared Lo in a previous interview with Tatler Singapore. “I welcome new artists to come in with their original artworks. Everybody needs a place to start.”

The Brilliant Legacy exhibition will run be presented at Gallery 1819 from November 6 to November 30. For more information, visit here
