The Filipino contemporary painter dominates the art space with an exhibition of his latest masterpieces, leaving only but room for contemplation
Carlo Magno? More like Carlo magnus. Meaning "great" in Latin, it precisely defines one of the beloved Filipino painters of our time. Carlo Magno is well-known for his spectacular artworks and versatility as a master of the arts. He first made his mark in his early years as a student, by displaying professionalism and passion in his crafts. Magno then conquered the art scene as a realist, sculptor and photographer before he shifted to an abstractionist. His oeuvre is almost always described as out of the box, full of surprises and brimming with courage. Art is constantly evolving and what makes Magno stand out among his fellow artists is his bravery to flow through and adapt to the many changes and discoveries in the industry while not compromising the quality of his works and still exceeding expectations.

Magno’s career started at the last line of the Philippine art’s Modernist era. He won his first prize at the YMCA Painting Competition for his Bayanihan canvas in 1980, his individual showcase reaped his reputation for specialising in a vigorous infusion of nostalgia and emotion through his hyper-realistic portraits at the Greenhills Art Center in 1981 and exhibitions at the Ayala Museum in 1990 and the Madrigal Art Center in 1992. In no time, Magno has already established a name for himself.

From realism to abstract, Art Lounge Manila recognises Magno’s exceptional skills. The latter’s style and way of creation speak volumes in the colossal world of mixed media art. And the former would like to celebrate Magno through an art exhibit going by the title Formal Parallels. Curated by Cindel Tiausas, the exhibition will accentuate Magno’s profound abstract works: refined artistry through the play of light and shadow, layers of hue, strokes of shapes, striking texture, and mixture of dramatic and aloof colours—aesthetic artworks in a whole without concrete reference and complete narrative that will leave you no choice but to come up with an interpretation of your own as you gaze at its final form.
Formal Parallels reflects Magno’s history of expertise and journey in the art sphere as his pieces resonates the thin line between realism and abstract; the parallelism of the two contradiction and how he was able to restructure its elements as one.
