Floral design firm Boenga, led by creative maestro Harijanto Setiawan, transforms event venues into magical landscapes with lavish botanical creations.

The luscious pastel shades of roses, hydrangeas, eustomas, tulips, peonies, delphinium and matthiolas float alongside glass balls filled with candles and crystals at this Ritz Carlton, Millenia Singapore wedding. Each of the two VIP tables also had a giant 2.5m-high centrepiece.

Anyone who moves in high society circles would have been mesmerised by Boenga’s breathtakingly elaborate floral decorations that weave magic at weddings, birthday parties and other celebrations, and even hotel lobbies and high-end stores.

Harijanto Setiawan, the chief artist behind the floral design firm, has made an art of bending nature’s beauty to dramatic effect, no matter the event’s theme. His clients are his “queens”, and he believes in never restricting their imaginations when conceptualising an event setting with them.

Known to be funky, avant-garde and original in his creations, Harijanto encourages his clients to simply be themselves when it comes to designing their own events. “What are your favourite colours, flowers and things in life? Your event should reflect your personality and what you want people to say about your party.” A client may hesitate about choosing her favourite colour or flower merely because it goes counter to what’s in fashion, “but you don’t have to tail someone and be a follower of trends”, he says.

“I always tell my clients that every colour is beautiful. It’s my responsibility as a designer to create a beautiful setting with what you personally love — and to make even ordinary flowers become divas!”
Harijanto, who is also a trained architect, won a platinum award in the International Designer of the Year 2015 competition by UK contemporary floral design magazine Fusion Flowers. He played with the stiffness of grass to create an unusual balloon sculpture with hundreds of hyacinthus encased inside.
He has also won the Silver Gilt Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show London in 2013 and picked up the Best Show and Gold Award at the Singapore Garden Festival in 2012.

This year, he will be busy with educational and charity projects around the world, and will also represent Singapore with a flowers-in-water exhibition at the Singapore Garden Festival 2016, to be held at the Gardens by the Bay in July. He has also been invited to do a floral fashion show in Colombo to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Shi-En Ikebana Floral & Art Society of Sri Lanka.
