"On Wednesday, November 23rd, our beloved Betsy Westendorp, a Spanish painter who made her name in the Philippines, passed away at her home in Aravaca (Madrid)," Instituto Cervantes de Manila wrote on its Facebook page this November 24, Philippine time, confirming the news circulating among friends and patrons of the revered painter. "We would like to remember her with this small tribute we paid her in the exhibition dedicated to her work. . ." the post continues, ending with a prayer that may she rest in peace.

One cannot help but think of Westendorp's large-scale, captivating paintings of clouds, bays, and sunsets. Her impressionist take on such dramatic landscapes leaves viewers with nothing but mere awe. Seeing her work up close is an unforgettable experience for many, most especially for this writer who once had the pleasure of interviewing her at her apartment as she cooked paella.

Spanish by birth and Filipino by marriage to Antonio Brias, Westendorp made a lasting mark in the Philippine art scene through her sublime paintings showcasing the beauty of nature and landscapes, the skies which are collectively known as Westendorp's atmosferografias, glimpses of Madrid cityscapes, and radiant flowers of various kinds. At the tender age of 12, she started to explore the world of art and find her own style, using her siblings and parents as her first models. Eventually, following Fernando Amorsolo's career in making portraits of distinguished society personalities, Westendorp soon also became a well-known portraitist.

A distinctive portrait artist, Betsy Westendorp’s images convey eloquent impressions of fascinating figures from royals and heads of state, to family and friends, the elite and the simply beautiful.

With sensitivity and restraint, she reveals their humanity. Her paintings of skies and flowers, landscapes, seascapes, barong-barongs and nightlife in Madrid are fragile, vibrant, and captured to perfection.

Her collection in Malacañan Palace is extensive and significant, expressing the appreciation of many presidents. Westendorp received prestigious awards from both countries. In 1976, His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain bestowed on her the distinguished Lazo de Dama de la Orden de Isabel la Catolica, the equivalent of knighthood for ladies.

In 2008 during the term of Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit for Art and Culture.

The Metropolitan Museum of Manila mounted in 2021 the retrospective exhibition of Westendorp's art spanning 60 colourful years. "The exhibition's underlying story is the artist's departure from Spain to commence what would be a lifetime relationship with the Philippines. It also reveals the paths that would lead to her self-definition as a woman, a wife, a mother, and an artist," Chit Lijauco wrote.

In 2020, Provenance Art Gallery also came up with an important exhibition of Westendorp's art. And in 2018, a two-volume coffee table book was published by the De La Salle University Publishing House, with the English text by revered art critic Cid Reyes and the Spanish text by Elena Florez. In 2016, Westendorp donated her vintage oil on masonite painting titled At Peace to the Tatler Ball's charity auction for the benefit of the Philippine General Hospital's Cancer Institute.

We express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends left by Westendorp. She will continue to be an inspiration to many artists, especially to those who wish to see and share their vision of beauty and wonder amidst the bleakest of days.
