Inside this magical event in Kuala Lumpur celebrating talented musicians Mei Lin Hii and Matyas Major

NegArt is a new art gallery in Kuala Lumpur founded by Negar Sajadifar with the purpose of contributing to Malaysia and Southeast Asia's vibrant arts and music scene by uplifting and supporting artists in the region. Its first event called Fantasia was held at The Row on Jalan Doraisamy over two days on March 30 and 31.

The night started with Rubenstein award-winning pianist Mei Lin Hii’s exquisite performance on the piano, made even more breathtaking with the minimal decor, mood lighting and soft flourishes. Her elegant yet passionate temperament shone through, with clarity of style and rhythmic precision. A duet with prolific cello player Matyas Major followed, dramatic lighting setting the mood. It was clear that Major’s rich experience playing in Italy, Switzerland and the distinguished Malaysian Philharmonic orchestra informed his performance as he expertly wielded his bow for the most difficult and emotive sequences.

The highlight of the night happened after the short intermission when multi-award-winning dancer hip-hop dancer Amirul Hafiz, known better by his stage name Peot, took the stage alongside Hii and Major for an interpretative hip-hop dance.

But that was not the end of the night's journey of classical music. After an extended standing ovation, Hii treated guests to a rendition of her favourite Argentinian tango piece to thunderous applause.

KL’s most stylish mingled as they shared their experience of the night, with free-flowing wine and canapés. Alex and Kelvin Cheah of Beta and Skillet at 163, as well as Roberto Guiati were among those in attendance. It was surely a night to remember with an abundance of beautiful entertainment and celebration of music.
