Arce celebrates the legacy of Intramuros through an art exhibit utilising unconventional media and experimental techniques
It can be easy to overlook even the most treasured jewels of our past. Intramuros, an enclave steeped in rich history, is oftentimes taken for granted; newer, shinier buildings have come about and people no longer seem to mill through its plazas as they loved to do in the past. This month, Filipino sculptural painter, Arce, shone a spotlight on this important. His latest exhibition entitled "ROPED: The Reflections of Our Past, The Enlightenment of Our Destiny” aimed to magnify the "gravity of history and the preeminence of faith in the social and moral fabrics of our young, evolving nation".

Known for his studies on perspective, Arce often incorporates unconventional uses of media and an experimental technique that is unique to him. For the exhibit, he spent six months creating a masterpiece that aims to show the walled city's once-glorious yet dark past.
Held at the Almacenes Reales at Fort Santiago, the event took place from December 10-13. Notable personalities were in attendance including Mark Bumgarner and Drs Z and Aivee Teo.
Arce's aforementioned masterpiece uses intricate artisan mirror frames to represent the past. On it, he layers his pieces with deconstructed and folded canvases to create intricate silhouettes and movements. In it, one can also see symbolisms from religion, which is a prominent fixture in our very own culture. The exhibit is done in collaboration with Art Underground.
