Lucky for us, in recent years many others have sat up and taken notice, meaning that there are now a range of zero-waste, plastic-free and bulk-buy stores to be found right here in Hong Kong. Whether you're looking to stock up on eco essentials, or start grocery shopping a little more sustainably, be sure to add these stores to your list.

1. Plastic Free HK

This sprawling 3,000 square-foot space in Kennedy Town is the first of its kind in Hong Kong—a supermarket stocked with everything you need to fill your home with eco-friendly products, zero-waste essentials and healthy kitchen supplies, like bulk ingredients that cater to those with special dietary requirements, including dairy- or gluten-free, vegan and raw foods. 

This bright and airy store boasts warm tones and plenty to peruse, making it a place where one could easily spend hours discovering unique independent brands and clever eco-alternatives for everyday use; think compostable unbleached and chlorine-free coffee filters, eco-friendly disposable bamboo utensils, biodegradable paper towels and organic beauty labels like Erbaviva and Neal's Yard.

3. Edgar

Have you ever bought an ingredient to find that it's only available in a quantity you couldn't possibly finish? If you're looking to minimise the waste in your life, buying in bulk is a great way to do it.

Edgar was one of the first to bring unpackaged bulk goods to Hong Kong, stocking organic and fair trade items ranging from cereals to pasta, dried food, nuts, seeds and more. Tea leaves, herbs and spices can also be bought in bulk here too.

4. Live Zero HK

With stores in Sai Ying Pun and Sai Kung, Live Zero HK is a haven for bulk goods that are free from harmful packaging. They stock a large selection of organic pantry staples including a variety flours, lentils and nut butters, as well as a delightful selection of sweet treats ranging from dried fruits to chocolate-covered goodies.  

Here, you'll also find a plethora of eco-friendly self-care items, like bio-based sunscreen by Surfer's Barrier, reusable facial rounds by Marley's Monsters and cleansing bars by Ethique.  

The store also has a separate space in Sai Ying Pun–– Live Zero Bulk Beauty––a collection of high quality skincare products that are ethically produced, free from nasty toxins and packaged 100% plastic-free. 5. Seed

Following the footsteps of zero-waste shops like Live Zero and and Edgar, Seed is a welcome addition to the Sai Kung neighbourhood. Offering everything you need to keep your home well-stocked, from pantry staples to household goods in bulk, Seed encourages patrons to bring their own containers to shop package-free, or you can donate HK$5 to use its donated containers, with 100% of the proceeds going back to the community. 

Expect to find plastic-free items including bulk foods such as dried fruits, seeds, spices and dried pasta; lifestyle items like eco-cups, beeswax wraps and lunch boxes; and cleaning products such as laundry liquid, bath soaps and hand sanitisers.

6. The Bulk Shop by Margella

Opening in June 2020, The Bulk Shop by Margella is one of Hong Kong's newest zero-waste and bulk buy stores. Located in Tai Po, it was founded by two friends––Margot Lane and Ella Wightman––to make the name "Margella".

Stocking a range of plastic-free products, from beauty and household products, to pantry essentials and even freshly baked bread, The Bulk Shop sets out to help all live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

7. Beyond Plastic

Living up to its name, Beyond Plastic sets out to tackle the problem of single-use plastics in Hong Kong. Starting out in early 2019, the founders worked with the food and beverage industry to find plastic-free alternatives and reduce the amount of plastic pollution on Hong Kong’s shorelines.

Selling to both retail customers and to businesses through its B2B Wholesale partnership, the store shops stocks a range of biodegradable, compostable and ecological household products, including the likes of natural deodorant, beeswax plastic wrap, biodegradable food containers, sustainably made clothing and more. Beyond Plastic also hold monthly Beach Cleanups at different beaches around Hong Kong, encouraging the public to face and tackle the waste issue in the city.
